How Tybee Island got its school back

If the calming crash of ocean waves and the squall of hungry seagulls weren't idyllic enough, just wait until the sweet sound of children at play returns to Tybee Island.
Tybee Maritime Academy Charter School is scheduled to open next year. The sleepy island community hasn't had a school since tiny St. Michael's closed three years ago. The determined residents who spent two years planning, petitioning and raising money for a charter school are working to make sure the facility is ready to welcome children back.

New charter schools for Tybee, Savannah approved

Young minds wishing to explore the seas or relive history through a lost language are in luck.
Two new schools — one with a focus on maritime education, another based on ancient Greek teaching techniques — were recently approved to open for the 2013-2014 academic year by the Georgia Department of Education.
Five-year charters for the Savannah Classical Academy and Tybee Island Maritime Academy were approved by the state board on Oct. 4.
